Chapter 12 · 12.5
Map and location: adjusting the date of a photo
A photo from your phone usually contains the date and time it was taken, and often the place too. This information is called metadata (or EXIF). Photos and Memories use it for the timeline and the map.
Your photos on the map
Open Map in Photos or in Memories. You'll see a world map showing where your photos were taken. Zoom in and click a cluster to see the photos from that place.

Doesn't a photo appear on the map? Then it has no location data. This happens if your camera app's location service was switched off, or if the photo was shared via WhatsApp, Signal or another app, as these often strip out the location. It's therefore better to upload the original, for example with automatic upload (see Automatically uploading photos).
Why does a photo show the wrong date?
Photos and Memories sort by the date stored in the photo itself. If there's no date in it, they use the file's date, usually the day it was uploaded. You often see this with:
- photos from a Google Photos export (Google puts the date in a separate file), see Transferring Google Photos with the correct dates and albums;
- scanned photos;
- photos forwarded via a messaging app.
Adjusting the date or location in Memories
- Open Memories and click the photo. It opens in full size. At the bottom left, you'll see the date and time currently stored in the photo.
- Click the three dots at the top right and choose Edit metadata.
- Under Date / Time, adjust the Year, Month, Day, Hour and Minute fields.
- Under EXIF Fields, you can optionally fill in a Title or Description. Under Geolocation, look up a place, or remove an incorrect location with the cross icon.
- Click Save at the bottom. Memories writes the new information into the photo itself, so it stays correct even if you download the photo later.

Tip: in the same menu, you'll find Rotate / Flip to straighten a crooked photo, and Add to album.
